How to Choose a Desktop Barcode Scanner or Handheld Barcode Scanner?

There are many types of scanners, and many people find it difficult to choose barcode scanners, especially those who run supermarkets. They often struggle with whether to choose a handheld barcode scanner or a barcode scanning platform.

In fact, whether it is a handheld barcode scanner or a barcode scanning platform, they complement each other and can be widely used in supermarkets, warehouses, hospitals and other scenarios, serving various industries. As for whether barcode scanning platforms are more suitable for supermarket cashiers or handheld barcode scanners, let's first understand the differences and advantages and disadvantages between them before making a decision!

There are two main differences and advantages and disadvantages between handheld barcode scanners and barcode scanning platforms: one is the difference in their appearance design, and the other is the difference in scanning methods.

Appearance designHandheld barcode scanner: The appearance design of the scanner gun is generally divided into two styles: wired and wireless. As the name suggests, a wired handheld barcode scanner comes with a data cable. Simply connect the data cable to the PC end of the computer and you can start scanning barcodes with the handheld barcode scanner. Wireless handheld barcode scanners, on the other hand, do not have a data cable and usually rely on Bluetooth connection. Some may come with a base, and after pairing and connecting the barcode scanner, they can scan barcodes.

Barcode scanning platform: When it comes to a platform, it means a scanner that can be placed parallel to the desktop. Just connect the data cable to the PC end of the computer and place it on the desktop. When a customer comes to make a payment, simply align the payment code with the scanning window to complete the payment process.

Scanning method

Handheld barcode scanner: Whether it is a wired or wireless handheld barcode scanner, we need to use it handheld to scan barcodes, and we need to press its trigger button every time we scan to scan. If operated for a long time, it is easy to cause hand soreness. However, also because it can handheld scan barcodes, it is more flexible than scanning platforms, allowing users to freely scan with a scanner gun.

Barcode scanning platform: Many platforms support both multi line scanning and single line scanning modes, and their scanning window is slightly larger than that of a barcode scanner. Simply shake the barcode at the scanning window to successfully scan it. Compared to handheld barcode scanners, it is simpler and more convenient. But it is also limited in that it can only be used on a table, requiring the barcode to be held in front of it for scanning.

So, which is more suitable for supermarket cashiers, barcode scanning platforms or handheld barcode scanners?

From the comparison between the handheld barcode scanner and barcode scanning platform above, it can be seen that choosing to use a barcode scanning platform will be more convenient and efficient in large supermarkets and crowded scenarios. But if you are in a small supermarket or need to scan barcodes flexibly, a handheld barcode scanner is a very good choice. Moreover, in general, the cost of handheld barcode scanners is lower than that of scanning platforms, and can also be purchased according to one's own budget.
